Consultation on the proposal to charge for household garden waste collections

Closed 25 Oct 2020

Opened 28 Sep 2020

Local authorities across the country are required by law to set a balanced budget, and as such difficult decisions had to be made on the sustainability of some services the council currently provides during the recent emergency budget in August 2020.

Street cleansing, household waste and recycling collections are statutory services that must be provided by the council and are therefore provided to the whole of the town.

Currently the council collects garden waste fortnightly from March to November and although we do not wish to stop this service, we have no legal duty to collect garden waste. The COVID-19 crisis which has had an impact on the funding available for services across the council means that we need to make cuts and so we are proposing changing the service to a chargeable garden waste service.

Why we are consulting

We currently provide a fortnightly kerbside collection of garden waste as a discretionary service to residents.

We know that a vast amount of residents value this service  and we are asking residents to give us their views on the introduction of a charge for this service.
